Fring lets you make free calls to anywhere in the world from your mobile phone
Written by shannon on March 23rd, 2010Want to use your cellphone to make free long-distance calls? Fring is a free service that lets you do this. Just download Fring onto your mobile phone and sign into your online accounts like AIM, Skype, GTalk, MSN, Facebook and more. Fring will load all your contacts, and if someone is online, you can choose to call them from the Fring application at no charge, even if that person is on the other side of the world.
How is it free? Fring uses a data connection for your calls. If you do not have an unlimited data plan, you’ll want to be careful with how many calls you make. A 1-minute VoIP call will use about 135 Kb of data and a 1-minute video call uses 1 MB. However, if your phone has Wi-Fi capability, then Fring won’t use any of your phone plan’s data and will make all your calls using Wi-Fi.
Pros:
- It’s a free service
- You can call any of your contacts anytime, no matter where they are, for as long as you want
- It works on your cellphone so you can be anywhere when you call someone
- You can make your free calls using Wi-Fi to avoid data usage
Cons:
- Free calls only to people who are currently online (and if you want to call Grandma and Grandpa, they’ll have to know how to use an online chat service like MSN, Skype, etc.)
Phone platforms supported: Symbian 8, Symbian 9-9.4, Windows Mobile, Sony Ericsson UIQ, iPhone/iPod Touch, Linux, Android
