Vopium is a free service that allows you to make free mobile-to-mobile calls. Simply download the application onto your phone (check compatibility here) and make sure your phone is connected to a Wi-Fi network.

Both you and the person you want to call must have Vopium installed and the connection must be mobile-to-mobile in order to avoid charges. If you want to call a landline or a non-Vopium user, there will be an international connection fee. Given how common it is these days for people to have a cellphone, however, and given how widespread Vopium’s handset support is, this requirement is hardly limiting.

Rebtel is a free online service that turns international numbers into local ones, eliminating the expensive connection fees.

How does it work? After you sign up for a Rebtel account, you can enter the international number of the person you wish to call. Rebtel will then provide you with a unique local number. You call that number, and once connected, the other person will need to put you on hold and call the number displayed on your phone (this will be another Rebtel number, not your personal one). Want to call India? Free calls can only be made between 50+ Rebtel-supported countries (India is not on this list), but you can also use the Rebtel service to make cheap phone calls to any country in the world.

The rate to India is usually a flat 3.9¢/min., but Rebtel is currently holding a promotion where if you prepay $25, for the following 364 days, the rate is only 1.8¢/min. to mobile phones and 2.4¢/min. to landlines. For $25, that would get you over 23 hours of talk time to someone’s cellphone (17+ hours to a landline). This promotion expires April 30, 2010.

How is it free? Fring uses a data connection for your calls. If you do not have an unlimited data plan, you’ll want to be careful with how many calls you make. A 1-minute VoIP call will use about 135 Kb of data and a 1-minute video call uses 1 MB. However, if your phone has Wi-Fi capability, then Fring won’t use any of your phone plan’s data and will make all your calls using Wi-Fi.

Pros:

  • You can call any of your contacts anytime, no matter where they are, for as long as you want
  • It works on your cellphone so you can be anywhere when you call someone
  • You can make your free calls using Wi-Fi to avoid data usage

Cons:

  • Free calls only to people who are currently online (and if you want to call Grandma and Grandpa, they’ll have to know how to use an online chat service like MSN, Skype, etc.)
