New! Make free calls with Google Hangouts

Written by josh on October 21st, 2013

On Friday, October 18, the Google Hangouts iOS app received a major update. The newest iteration brings free in-app voice calling to numbers within the U.S. and Canada, as well as incoming call support to a user’s Google Voice number.

Google Hangouts version 1.3.0 for iOS allows iPhone, iPad and iPod touch owners to place in-app phone calls to any number in the US and Canada for free. The new feature brings the Google Hangouts app in line with the version for desktop computers, which already allows the calling functionality.

As of now, the free calling is confined to North America. International calls can be made for a fee. Additionally, users can now receive calls to their Google Voice numbers, which can be setup to ring the app directly.

Lastly, the app supports inline animated GIFs, while incoming messages will only pause music instead of stopping the track completely.

Google is clearly competing with Apple’s brand new FaceTime app that was rolled out with iOS 7 which allows free calls to be made within the US and Canada as well.

Right now the update is only available for iOS, but will come to Android soon.
