Pinger aims to challenge Skype

A new company from San Jose, California is hoping to challenge Skype by offering free voice calls and a new ping post system. Pinger is doing this by piggybacking voip on their TextFree application, a very popular app that allows you to send free text SMS messages.

If you haven’t heard of TextFree, it’s an app that allows each user to get their own phone number even with a Ipod Touch. This is quite amazing since TextFree currently has given out over 8 million phone numbers, making it one of the Top 10 US mobile carriers.

If your wondering how they make money, they do so by showing ads while you compose a message. Pinger serves roughly 1.2 billion ads at present time and sends 4 billion messages each month. Imagine that keeping you up all night. Stop messaging meeee!

As for making phone calls, you’ll be given a limited amount of free monthly minutes, which you can increase by completing 3rd party offers or downloading other apps. you can also purchase them of course with credit card.

Please note that the voice calling is not offered yet but is coming soon. You can however sign up for free texting and get your own real phone number even for the Ipod touch! Pinger does plan to offer worldwide service so it should be interesting to see what kind of stir this causes in the mobile industry.

If you give it a try, please let us know below what you think.
