Use FaceTime to make free calls on iOS 7

Have you downloaded the new iOS 7 yet? If you have you’ll notice a stand alone FaceTime icon on your phone. This new FaceTime app not only lets you make video calls for free, it lets you make audio calls too!

With iOS 7, you’ll be able to place audio-only calls via FaceTime, so you don’t need to worry about using minutes on your calling plan. These calls use your data plans if you are not connected to WiFi.

Apple is stepping up its game in the VoIP scene with this iOS 7 update.

To make a voice call using FaceTime, the process is very similar to making a video call. The only difference is you hit the phone icon instead of the video camera icon.

You’ll see the icon when viewing a contact in the Contacts app, or in the the FaceTime app when browsing your contact list.

When you tap this icon, the phone will place a call that looks just like a FaceTime video call, but only audio will be transmitted.

This move by apple is a further attempt to compete with communication apps such as WhatsApp, Skype and Viber.

Apple already challenges competitors with iMessage, its text message feature, and Facetime video, which use data networks.

This update will lock more users into the Apple ecosystem.

Simply download iOS 7 and start making free calls with FaceTime.
